I was born in Philadelphia in 1958 and began studying photography while a student at Smith College, where I was introduced to the work of Walker Evans. His direct documentary photographs continue to strongly influence my work. I began exploring the poetry of simple houses in Northampton, MA and Philadelphia. These homes are typically isolated and silent. I am inspired by the quiet of the shadows that falls on them as well as the surrounding fences. In my work there is a compelling balance between pure documentary and a moody, evocative sense of place and memory.
In 1985 I moved to California where I continued to make direct and simple portraits of homes. Additionally, I have made a series of intricate photo collages further exploring the abstract and graphic nature of the structures of homes as well as landscapes.
